This grill, the centerpiece of grilling team "Frankenswine", once provided heat as a propane tank. Now it is a hog smoking machine capable of feeding a small army.

The sow is the brainchild of Harold and David Henderson. In David's words:

"My dad (Harold Henderson) and I built the smoker about 5 years ago, and since that time my interest in "smokin" has skyrocketed. We first started cooking for family and friends and then decided to enter the Shawnee cookoff. After our first year we were hooked, and we have enjoyed participating more and more each year. We like the Shawnee event because the weather is usually perfect, and it has a great family atmosphere."

The father and son team toiled in the father's shop battling 120 degree heat to bring Frankenswine to life. The enormous grill was apparently their effort to feed the world's hungry (well, at least their family and friends).

Since then, the sow has graced Great Grillers with her presence for three grill-offs, and is expected back for 2002.

Here is one of a pair of John Deer-like grills owned by the Burris family. The family warmly opened their party to eager onlookers of the high-horsepower cookers as they celebrated this year's pre-competition countdown on Friday night. As if the friendly smiles were not enough to welcome passers by, the offering of a fine cigar surely made a visit worthwhile.

This year the latest of the tractors was adorned with a whole hog laid across it's massive cutting board. With a display like these guys put together, we look forward to seeing what they have in store for 2002.

According to Jim Burris, Great Grillers may be welcoming a third tractor next year.
